How to perform phone backups the Mobius way.

Mobius contains a number of powerful tools to perform data manipulation
and backups, and because of the number of different options, we get
asked a lot about which way is best.

There is no single right answer to this, but we do find that a lot of
users aren't making full use of the tools available. The most common
error is to use the CSV export facility as the main backup method.

CSV files are flat text files that can be opened in a number of
different applications. This has certain advantages when it comes to
converting data for other uses. However; there is no standard way of
laying such a file out when storing phonebook contacts, and most CSV
formats only contain basic field data. The latest version of Mobius
extends support for CSV, however it should not be considered the primary
method of performing a backup (nor should it be used as a method to
export/import from Microsoft Outlook - drag and drop is much safer and
easier!)

Mobius works on the principle of manipulating and storing in a format as
close as possible to the underlying data in the phone, which aims to
minimise loss of phone-specific data (you may notice other applications
can lose images or voice tags when editing a contact, for example).

The best way to back up your phone is to simply click the phone in the
tree and click the "one-touch-backup" button in the toolbar. Mobius
will synchronise and copy everything it can into a timestamped folder in
the "My Mobius" tree, which is saved on disk in your My Documents folder.

The latest version of Mobius offers a new option - you can right-click a
phone or one of its folders, and select "Export->To a Mobius backup
file". This enables you to output a folder to a specific file, in
Mobius' native format, and preserving as much detail as possible. The
file can then be accessed using the File menu in Mobius.
